Susan Scheer

Susan Scheer has over twenty years of management and policy experience in the government and non-profit sectors. She mos recently served as the Associate Director for Policy to New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, where her portfolio included education,healthcare, financial security,housing, and disability issues. She is also the volunteer President of the Disabilities Network of New York City and a member of Manhattan Community Board 3, where she chaired the Health and Human Services Committee. Previously she headed the Office of Disability Services at Columbia University and the Center for Independence of the Disabled in New York City (CIDNY), where she helped spearhead the City's emergency response program for people with disabilities in the aftermath of 9/11. At the Office of the Public Advocate, she filed a federal complaint documenting violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act in the NYC Transit Authority's Access-A-Ride program; A federal finding of discrimination resulted in a plan to eliminate intentional trip denials and established a national precedent. She helped design,implement and then directed Access-A-Ride, the citywide para-transit program for people with disabilities, for the New York City Department of Transportation. Susan Scheer is the recipient of numerous awards for her advocacy work, including the Alfred P. Sloan award given annually to honor outstanding City managers. She is a graduate of Yale University and lives in the East Village, NYC with her husband and daughter.
