United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel based in Dakar, Senegal
Toby Lanzer of the United Kingdom is the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel based in Dakar, Senegal.
In this capacity he supports humanitarian work in nine countries across the Sahel region (Burkina Faso, Chad, Cameroon, the Gambia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal.
Mr. Lanzer brings to the position varied experience in development, humanitarian affairs and peacekeeping since first joining UNDP in 1992. His most recent positions have included Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan; Chief of Staff of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT); Humanitarian Coordinator for Darfur, Sudan; and UNDP Resident Representative in the Central African Republic. He has also served as Chief of the Chief of the Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP), based in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva, and as Head of the OCHA Office in the Russian Federation.
He has also worked on human rights issues for non-governmental organisations in Brazil and Chile. The holder of a post-graduate certificate in forced migration, a master’s degree in international affairs, with a specialization in economic and political development, and a bachelor’s degree in history, Mr. Lanzer was educated at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, as well as Columbia University and the University of New Hampshire in the United States.
Born in 1965, he is married and has three children.
