Tyree Dillingham

Since becoming executive director of the San Diego branch of After-School All-Stars in 2010, Tyree has made a tremendous impact on the organization’s success, development and curriculum. She launched San Diego’s first ever high school dropout prevention camp in partnership with San Diego State University, CampUS, which targets incoming ninth-graders who are the most at-risk for dropping out.

Tyree is constantly expanding programming throughout San Diego with the aim to reach as many schools as possible and has already acquired four additional schools: Integrity Charter School, Pacific Beach Middle School, Mission Bay High School and the Monarch school. Each year, she takes the most deserving students to Mammoth Mountain to learn how to ski and snowboard. Last year, students worked with US Olympian Stacy Cook and X Games Gold Medalist Skier Johnny Teller. The President’s Council on Physical Fitness came out to visit one of Tyree’s sites and said that her physical education program was “a model for the rest of America.”

A Sacramento, CA native, Tyree took an interest in politics at a young age. She began working on political campaigns at age 12 and interned with a number of elected officials including California Attorney General Dan Lungren and California Governor Pete Wilson. While still in college, Tyree went to work for a real estate investment company where she did marketing and sales for 5 years in their student housing division, until she was promoted and moved her career to Boston, MA. In Boston, she worked on account acquisitions and event planning until she moved back to California when the recall of Governor Gray Davis was beginning to take shape. She wrote business plans and marketing plans for high tech and bio tech startup companies while volunteering in the Governor’s Office until she was asked to come on board full time in 2004. Tyree served as the Deputy Director of the Governor’s San Diego Office until December 2009. The Governor then asked Tyree to lend her time and talent to After-School All-Stars, an organization he founded in 1992 to serve underprivileged youth across the country.

Tyree graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Business Management and a degree in Political Science. In her free time, Tyree is a Brownie Girl Scout leader and mentors a Little Sis from Big Brothers Big Sisters. She also is a graduate of the LEAD San Diego class of 2009 where she helds the position of Social Chair and worked on the Urban Corps Leadership Action Team. Tyree volunteers with the American Heart Association, organizes California Legislative Connection where she gives Legislative staffers the opportunity to learn about issues facing the region and to network with community leaders, a member of the Herb Klein Leadership series, regional chair for the Mega women coalition on the Meg Whitman for Governor campaign, serves as the President for the California Women’s Leadership Association (CWLA) San Diego Chapter and the CWLA Political Action Committee, as well as, sitting on the CWLA Statewide Board. Most recently, Tyree has been recognized as one of the 2010 Top 40 Under 40 by San Diego Metropolitan Magazine.

In November of 2008, Tyree completed her first triathlon, a lifelong goal, and looks forward to competing in the future. She is also a published author with her motivational story “An Elf’s Tale” in the 5th Edition of Chicken Soup for the Soul, Women’s World Magazine, and several foreign reprints in different countries around the world. In her free time, Tyree enjoys traveling to new places, snowboarding, cooking, baking, anything to do with food, salsa dancing, spin classes, trying new things, meeting new people, and conquering new challenges!
