Val Britton is a San Francisco-based artist who creates immersive, mixed media works on paper that draw on the language of maps to explore physical and psychological spaces. Born in New Jersey, she received her B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design and her M.F.A. from California College of the Arts. She is a recipient of the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant and
has participated in residencies and fellowships such as the Affiliate Program at Headlands Center for the Arts, Recology in San Francisco, the Millay Colony for the Arts, Kala Art Institute, Jentel, Caldera, and the Ucross Foundation. She has exhibited her work in solo and group shows
throughout the nation including a recent solo exhibition at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. In June, she will exhibit new work at Foley Gallery in New York.
Her work is held in public collections including the New York Public Library, the New-York Historical Society, the Library of Congress, and the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings, Elephant, and The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography by Katharine Harmon. Britton is currently working on a large-scale permanent public art commission for the San Francisco International Airport.
