Briana Whiteside is a doctoral student at The University of Alabama. She received her B.A from Tougaloo College, and M.A from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Her research interests include Afrofutursim, pop culture, politics of natural hair, black feminism, and science fiction. She teaches African American literature at the University and has taught in medium and maximum-security prisons where she is working to create the first literary library in the prison system. The concentrated research that she will pursue over the next years will seek to account for, through literary and quantifiable means the ways that a large number of diverse writers and visual artists have represented women across time. Furthermore, she seeks to assist and encourage women who struggle with identity, self-esteem and confidence. To that end, Briana serves as a mentor to a group of undergraduate women to help develop skills and positive habits while looking and feeling fabulous.
