William B. Gould IV, an emeritus law professor at Stanford Law School, first went to South Africa in 1977 under the auspices of the Carter administration State Department and attended President Mandela’s 1994 inauguration as Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board in the Clinton administration. His very first publication was a 1959 review of Alan Paton’s Hope for South Africa in The New Republic.
