Yvonne Thornton, M.D.

Dr. Yvonne Thornton is a double-board certified specialist in obstetrics, gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine who has risen to the faculty rank of Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is the first African-American woman in the United States to be board-certified in high-risk obstetrics and is presently a senior perinatologist at Westchester Medical Center in New York.

Dr. Thornton received her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, after which she and her husband – orthopedic surgeon Dr. Shearwood McClelland -- volunteered for active military duty and she was commissioned as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy at The National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda (Hospital of The President).

Dr. Thornton is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, the Best Doctors in the New York Metro Area and has been listed as one of New York Magazine’s top ten maternal-fetal medicine specialists in New York City.

She is the nationally bestselling author of the family memoir, "The Ditchdigger’s Daughters," which has been translated into 19 languages and adapted into an award-winning world premiere movie for cable television. The long-awaited sequel "Something to Prove: A Daughter’s Journey to Fulfill a Father’s Legacy" was released in December, 2010. Her other books include "Woman to Woman," "Primary Care for the Obstetrician and Gynecologist," and "Inside Information for Women."
