Representative Gabrielle Giffords inspired millions during an ABC interview Monday when she showed how far she's come since getting shot in the head point blank. But one viewer, a 21-year-old man who became paralyzed during a drive-by shooting, was particularly moved by her story.
"Faith, family and friends and seeing what Giffords has done," Pepiton told azfamily.com are what motivate him toward recovery. "I'll be able to get there too one day."
Pepiton was shot in the head in September by a man who was looking for someone else.
The Pheonix native suffered many of the same challenges Giffords endured, such as having to relearn to express himself, which he told the news station has been one of his greatest obstacles.
While Pepiton can't walk or stand on his own, he has regained full ability to articulate himself.
"I know I won't make a 100 percent recovery," Pepiton told the news outlet. "But I want to make a 99.9 percent. That would be good."
But, because Pepiton's health insurance only covers rehabilitation three days a week, he can't afford to get as much therapy as Giffords has.
Still, Pepiton's mom, Tara, has been blown away by her son's progress so far and calls him her "true miracle child."
