Juliet Grand Suite at Lucknam Park, near Bath, UK

If you like grand English country piles, you'll be in heaven at Lucknam Park near Bath. Except this beautiful house, built in 1720 takes things to another level having cleverly fused genuine old world elegance with ultra modern mores. Couples can enjoy romantic walks through the woodland and magnificent mile-long drive lined with beech and lime trees, spend cosy afternoons curled up in front of a log fire in the library, pamper themselves with a couples spa treatment in the sexy, modern spa, followed by a romantic candlelit dinner in the Michelin-starred Park Restaurant. The Juliet Grand Suite is the one to bag with a view across the lavender garden and estate and a four-poster bed, for which a stool is needed for couples to climb in.

Overwater bungalow at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, French Polynesia

The South Pacific island of Bora Bora is surrounded by sand-fringed motus (islets). For maximum romance, stay in an overwater bungalow perched on stilts over the shimmering lagoon. The Four Seasons Bora Bora bungalows feature traditional Polynesian wood furnishings with a glass panel in the floor that looks down into the lagoon for a 'Tahitian television' experience. Bathrooms come with an oversized bathtub - large enough for two - and a deck that extends the length of the bungalow with a ladder plunging directly into the lagoon below. The private pool on deck is the perfect place for a sundowner overlooking Mount Otemanu.

Cottage 7 at Jamaica Inn, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Jamaica Inn is a blast of elegance from the 1950s, a time when Jamaica was a fashionable hangout for the likes of 007 author Ian Fleming and playwright Noel Coward. Tucked away at one end of the hotel is Cottage 7, a super private one-bedroom, two-storey hideaway with a sea view, even from the bathroom and pebble-floored outdoor shower. The living room has 20-foot wide glass doors facing a private infinity pool. Below, the pool deck is cantilevered over the sea for lounging or dining. The bedroom has a custom-made four-poster bed and luxurious rugs.

The Honeymoon Suite at Stanley Safari Lodge, Livingstone, Zambia

The romance of an African safari is hard to beat when you have a base as seductive as Stanley Safari Lodge. The honeymoon suite is a secluded chalet with its own private plunge pool, made even more special with romantic turn-down and private dinners. The full board price includes a guided tour of the Victoria Falls on both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides, mountain biking, a walking safari in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park to see the rhinos, village and museum tour.

Laamu Water Villas with private pool at Six Senses Laamu, Maldives

There's nothing quite so romantic as waking up over water, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves around you. In true Six Senses style, the over water villas at its Maldives property are tasteful yet subtle, with state of the art speakers hidden in the ceiling and plasma TV in one of the walls. Couples also enjoy a private outside decking area (partly covered if you want to curl up in the shade), with a transparent floor to watch the ocean life happening beneath you. This area is amazing for private candlelit dinners. Another highlight is the bath which is also clear, so you can see through the bottom - positioned by the ocean with walls that totally fold away to reveal the ocean panorama beyond. Not forgetting the bed! There is a pillow menu, essential oils menu and even sleep therapists. Each villa comes with its own 'treehouse' at the top - another comfy hideaway to spend your first days of married life together.

Honeymoon suite at Pousada Picinguaba, near Partaty, Brazil

In the build up to the 2016 Olympics, Brazil is popular right now with young honeymooners. Head off the beaten track to the sleepy fishing village just south of Paraty (between Rio and Sao Paulo) to Pousada Picinguaba set in the rainforest overlooking a peaceful bay in the Natural Park of Serra do Mar. A member of Hip Hotels, the pousada combines Brazilian panache with French chic and it's a genuine digital detox with no internet or televisions. The honeymoon suite is decorated in funky Brazilian art and has a private Jacuzzi and balcony but the real attraction is the stunning view it offers over the bay.

Balinese culture is so beguiling, a honeymoon there is guaranteed to be a special experience. Alila Villas Uluwatu is one of a new breed of design-led hotels on this magical island. Its private pool villas each have gorgeous modern pools that lead to a large day bed overhanging the cliff edge. The contemporary style juxtaposes brilliantly with the dramatic scenery.
