Apple promised to award a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate to the person who downloaded the 10 billionth app from its App Store.
The lucky winner was Gail Davis, whose teen daughters helped Apple reach the milestone by downloading the PaperGlider app. But she nearly missed out on the five-figure prize when she mistook a call from Apple's VP of iTunes, Eddy Cue, for a prank call.
"I said, 'Thank you very much, I'm not interested' and I hung up," David told Cult Of Mac.
Davis explained that she "had a moment of panic" when her daughters explained to her that they could, in fact, have won such a prize.
Cult of Mac recounts the mad dash to get in touch with Apple that ensued:
"The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was a genuine call," she says. "The girls were getting quite tense. They never would have forgiven me. They would have held it against me for all eternity."Luckily, an Apple executive rang back a couple of hours later.
"I was hugely relieved," says Davis. "I was getting really worried."
Louis Sulcer, another Apple winner who was awarded a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate for downloading the 10 billionth song from iTunes, called Steve Jobs a liar when the CEO called Sulcer to congratulate him.
"He called me and said, 'This is Steve Jobs from Apple.' I said, 'Yeah right,' " Sulcer told Rolling Stone. "I have a son that loves to play tricks and he does that every now and then -- calls me and imitates somebody."
