To be successful in life doesn't always have to do with money or your income but rather your habits and who you associate yourself with, being the key factors to leading a successful life.

Between the ages of 18 and 22, you come across a lot of temporary people in your life. People who lead successful lives have this ability to cut "toxic people" out of their lives. If someone isn't helping you get to where you want to be tomorrow, end your relationship with them. Successful people associate themselves with other successful people. They associate themselves with people who motivate their dreams and help expand their ideas, they support you and encourage you and love you.

Successful people are well aware of the importance of healthy relationships, and they don't put up with anyone who treats them poorly. Unlike others, who may give someone a million chances to screw them over, successful people get burned once, but never by the same flame. When we associate ourselves with people who are successful, we are motivated to better ourselves and we feed off of their positivity.

Relationships

When it comes to relationships, successful people are confident enough in themselves to pursue the most desirable partners. Power couples don't just happen by coincidence, they happen because each person has their own lives on track for success. When someone lacks confidence, they may settle for a partner that is not on their level. Successful people never settle for someone who does not motivate them to be a better person every day.

Organization

People who are successful are very clean and organized, but if you aren't a clean freak, at least make your bed every day. It gives you even a small sense of accomplishment, and who doesn't like coming home to a clean room?

Make to-do lists.

Every night before they go to bed, they are already thinking about tomorrow and the possibility of what is to come. They don't have time to stay in bed an hour longer because they know the value of time, and they know how to effectively use their time.

Reading

The famous quote, "Poor people have big TVs. Rich people have big libraries." -- Jim Rohn. When you are successful, you are always reading something to either help you better yourself or better your career. You are reading newspapers, so you are aware of what is going on in the world, and you are reading actual books because you know the everyday importance of gaining knowledge. A question every person should be able to answer starting his or her day is, "What is going on in the news?" We graduate college, and the average person thinks learning is over. Successful people, however, know that gaining knowledge is acquired in their everyday life, not just in the school system.

Goals

Every Sunday I write out a goal board for the week, and around the weekly goal board are my one to five year goals. I read them every day and I remind myself what I want in the future. Successful people know the importance of setting and obtaining those goals. The people who just live day-to-day without a plan will always be stuck in the same spot.

Moderation

If there is one word that can go hand in hand with success, it's moderation. You don't see the most successful people in the world falling all over themselves in bars every night. You don't see them at buffets filling their plates. Maybe once in a blue moon you do, but that is because they live life through moderation. We don't have to be perfect; we are allowed to consume certain foods and drinks every once in a while. People who aren't successful often exceed their limits.

Competition

Successful people understand one thing and one thing only: The only person you are in competition with is yourself. Your goal should be to better yourself every single day. Successful people don't compare themselves to others; they know they are on their own path.

Community

Successful people know how important it is to be an active member of their community. Charity and community service is important because no matter how successful you are; you can fall from the top at any moment. If you were a good person on your way up, your fall won't be hard because you have established many important relationships that will help you bounce back. You don't have to be selfish to be successful. Helping others gives you a feeling unlike anything money or success can buy.

Friendships

If there is one thing my father instilled in me over the years -- even before he did his study -- was the importance of relationships. As the years have passed and people have come and gone out my life, I find that there is rarely a moment when I run into someone from the past whom doesn't want to catch up. I established this reputation by remembering peoples' birthdays. I think two of the most important aspects when meeting someone is remembering their name and remembering their birthday. Even sending a call, text or card is so important. People remember you for the way you make them feel about themselves. I pride myself on my ability to connect with people, even if we are no longer in each other's daily lives. One day a year they know that I am thinking of them.

Failure

If you ask any successful person if they have ever failed, their answer will always be yes. It will immediately be followed by a story that shaped them. If you haven't failed, then you aren't pushing yourself past your comfort zone. Some of the most successful people in the world have failed at one point. Never let success go to your head, or failure go to your heart.

Happiness

Some of the most successful people I know appear to be the happiest. I stress on the word appear because a lot of time these people are dealing with inner struggles that we know nothing about. They know the importance of spreading positivity and uplifting others. No one wants to be around someone who brings them down, and the happiest people in life are also the most successful.
