12-Year-Old Arrested For Firing Gun In Middle School Bathroom

A 12-year-old Chicago-area boy has been arrested after firing a gun inside a middle school bathroom in what may have been an accident.

Police were called to MacArthur Middle School in west suburban Berkeley, Ill., after a shot was heard inside the school Wednesday afternoon, according to the Associated Press.

Police say the boy fired a 9mm gun at a toilet inside the Chicago-area school while he was either looking at or possibly attempting to unload the gun, WGN reports. It is not yet known how the boy obtained the weapon, but officials believe he had the gun in school all day Wednesday.

According to a statement from Berkeley Schools Superintendent Dr. Eva Smith, the student did not threaten any other students with the gun, Fox Chicago reports.

The student has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon and is now in custody at the Cook County juvenile detention center. He is expected to be expelled for the rest of the year.
