1960s Hair Icons Who Taught Us Everything About Big Hair

When newly elected President John F. Kennedy took office in 1961 with his radical ideals for social reform, all eyes were on The White House. But it wouldn't be long before his wife, Jackie Kennedy, would steal the spotlight thanks to her designer threads and signature bouffant.

Jackie's super-teased hair -- whether styled into a flipped-up bob or brushed back into a shoulder-skimming 'do -- embodied grace and glamour. Naturally, it became a highly-requested look at salons all across America.

'60s film actresses like Jane Fonda and Raquel Welch also made big hair popular. Meanwhile, style icons Catherine Deneuve and Brigitte Bardot showed us how to add flirty and feminine touches to the bouffant with ribbons and headbands. And with the right amount of hairspray, backcombing and bobby pins, the bouffant could easily be achieve by women with short or long lengths, bangs and even curlier textures.

Today's stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Drew Barrymore and Anne Hathaway have all tried their turn at '60s bouffant hair (sometimes falling short of success). So we've rounded up some classic photos to remind us how to get it right.
