Jason Collins, a free agent who played with the Boston Celtics and the Washington Wizards during the National Basketball Association's 2012-13 season, made history on April 29 when he became the first male professional athlete currently playing in the United States to announce he's gay.

Though this is a monumental event for the sports and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, many other athletes have come out of the closet in the past.
