3 Keys for Building a Powerful Online Persona

As an executive living in the digital age, communicating your value is an essential task if you want to establish yourself as a credible authority and build trust with potential customers. Your online persona could mean the difference between getting that new job, or securing a major client.

With blogging, we now have the unique opportunity to create a lasting impression, share our perspectives, and add to the conversation that's already happening within our industries. Blogging is a tool that can help you build a powerful online persona and grow your industry authority.

Start here.
Share your expertise and write about what you know. There is a conversation already happening around your subject matter, and you need to participate. If you don't have a blog, start one. If you don't know what to write, read articles of other industry experts and influencers. Digest the information, then ask yourself the following:
  • What is the expert introducing or explaining?
  • Do I agree or disagree with the expert's point of view?
  • Read the comments. What does the audience think?
  • What's my take on the particular topic?

There are many advantages to reading industry-related content. For one, you can gain inspiration to articulate your own point of view in a blog post. And two, you can use the audience's feedback to generate ideas and interesting topics to address in the future.

Here are three essential elements for creating a powerful online persona that builds trust and credibility with your audience.

Be Authentic

Make sure your online persona matches who you are in real life. Be yourself. People appreciate authenticity. I used to struggle with appearing vulnerable in my blog posts. I didn't want my audience to know of my mishaps and insecurities out of fear of judgement. Once I got passed my apprehension and started being more transparent, my posts resonated with more people.

Some people believe they're supposed to build an invisible wall to shield the audience from their shortcomings. However, there's great power in acknowledging and showing your humanity. People connect with your flaws and experiences. Your audience wants to know that you're just like them. Your personality and genuine spirit should permeate through your writing. When this happens, more people will connect with your message and spread it like wildfire.

Add Value

Discover what your customers want to know and address those issues directly in a blog post. What are your customer pain points? What are the trends in your industry? What is the future of your industry?

When you add value people will grow to appreciate your opinion. They'll even start looking forward to your blog posts and sharing your point of view with their network.

Write a piece that either cosigns a widely spread topic or refutes a popular view. If it's a thought-provoking post, people will circulate your content and create discourse. #Winning!

Be Consistent

If you're not consistent, you'll most certainly be forgotten. Most people are excited when they first begin their blogging journey, but then the enthusiasm fizzles over time. Consistency is key. Develop an editorial calendar and publishing schedule and stick to it! Get an accountability partner to keep you on track.

If you're being authentic, adding value, and are consistent with your efforts, you'll incrementally grow your industry clout, which will help skyrocket your profit.
