Self-care is by no means a new concept, but nowadays, self-care has had a huge following. Just in case you’re wondering, self-care is a voluntary activity which helps maintain your wellness and health (mentally, physically, and spiritually). Most of us know that we must look after our own well-being and health, and stay positive at most times. However, there are still misconceptions that remain and myths that continue to arise.

It is important that we look after ourselves, in order to be the best for others. Self-care is about identifying your own specific needs and following steps to meet them and adjust to make things better for your own good. This is the core of self-care, we shall discuss go through and bust three of the most common misconceptions about self-care.

3 Misconceptions Of Self-Care

  1. Self-care is anything that soothes you; it requires lavishing yourself –Self-care practices the need to support health and wellness. Many people turn to activities such as drinking, video games, television marathons, and food to relieve stress and calm them down. These are undeniably soothing activities, but these are the opposite of what self-care practices. Self-care is all about supporting your wellness and overall quality of life. You must do everything in moderation and you should not be compulsive, additive, or harmful to your mind, body, emotions, and wallet.Self-control is also an utmost priority when it comes to self-care. You need to confine yourself and stay away from activities or indulgences that will lead you astray. Don’t lean on things that simply please and soothe you. You always have to look at long-term consequences; don’t always focus on short-term instances. They‘re fun but only won’t last for so long. Investing in long-term goals is always the best way to go.
  2. It’s selfish: making a choice between yourself and others –This is one of the biggest myths about self-care. Focusing on your own wellness and health does not mean that you’re selfish. If we do not take care of ourselves, we end up wasting our precious time and energy on a bunch of activities that deprive us of our emotional reserves. We lose ourselves and run the risk of potentially harming others, not physically, but emotionally. The last thing you want for others is for them to worry about you. We also need the help of others to encourage our needs. We may all be vulnerable to being selfish, but when we can sustain ourselves and all our needs are met then we have more to give to others. A well-nourished self-makes for a more selfless personality. Remember, there is no greater thing to offer to the world than you at your best.
  3. Self-care is the same for everybody –There may be certain sets of steps to take, when you plan on taking on self-care. But that doesn’t mean that if it worked for somebody, the same methods and strategies will work in the same way for you as well. Keep in mind that we are all unique, and not everything black and white. Whatever suits your needs and fulfils your spirit is your proper prescription. You may not share the same recipe with others, that’s the beauty of self-care; it provides you with the opportunity to understand yourself in a much deeper level. We all need different things, we all have different wants and needs, and some may need to be more open, while need to limit themselves.

There are many different ways for everybody to achieve a well-nourished self. There are not prescriptions to self-care, I believe to each is their own. What works for you? How do you take care of yourself? Leave a comment and let us know!
