A 4-year-old girl who was raped and suffocated has died in a hospital in India.
The victim died Monday at a facility in Nagpur, where she was brought after being found unconscious and profusely bleeding near a crematorium in her village last week, according to India-based broadcaster NDTV. The girl was reportedly raped in Ghansaur, suffocated and left for dead on April 17.
A team of six doctors attended to the young child, who sustained severe brain trauma and was in a coma, NDTV reported. Last week, her condition deteriorated.
On Monday around 7:50 p.m. local time, she succumbed to her injuries.
"We have informed the MP government about the death of the girl," a spokesperson for the hospital told the Hindustan Times. "Her body was sent to the government run medical college and hospital for a post mortem."
The Press Trust of India, which identifies the girl as a 5-year-old, reported that the victim died of cardiac arrest. Her body was sent to the Government Medical College for a postmortem examination.
On April 23, 35-year-old power plant worker Firoz Khan was arrested, according to the Times of India. He is suspected of raping the girl and then fleeing to Bihar. Police were able to track him down with the use of mobile phone signals and with the help of local residents.
Khan was allegedly assisted by Rakesh Choudhary, The Hindu reported. Choudhary, who was apprehended before Khan, is said to have lured the child from her home and brought her to the main suspect. Police believe he was able to do so without much effort because he is familiar with the girl's family.
The family held out hope that the little child would make a recovery.
“My Daughter has not opened her eyes since last four days," the mother of the victim said to The Hindu before her daughter's death. "I want to see her open her eyes."
