5 Million Meals and Counting

Three years ago when I was 11, I started two websites called freekibble.com and freekibblekat.com to help feed the animals at my local shelter, the Humane Society of Central Oregon. I have always loved animals and began volunteering at the shelter at the youngest age possible.

I soon realized that shelters, not just the one I volunteered at, but all across the country, were having a really difficult time getting food donations for their animals. I talked about this with my parents and told them that somehow, we had to help the homeless animals in my area. That's when we came up with the website idea. We would have a daily trivia question (dog and cat related), that when you answered, right or wrong, we would donate 10 pieces of Kibble to the Humane Society of Central Oregon.

Over the next two months, my parents and I worked very hard to get the sites up and going. On April 1, 2008, we launched freekibble.com and on June 1, we launched freekibblekat.com. In the first month, we delivered 240 pounds of kibble to the shelter and I was so excited. Let's face it; I would have been thrilled if we had donated just one pound of kibble. Little did I know then, that we would one day donate a number of meals so much bigger than I could have ever imagined...

Recently we officially donated our five millionth meal to homeless pets. This is a huge accomplishment for us. Not only have we donated 5 million meals, we've been able to help feed homeless dogs and cats in over 125 shelters, rescues and food banks across the country. This is so amazing to me because when we first launched the two sites, I didn't know it was possible to help dogs and cats at one shelter get fed, let alone this many.

We knew from the beginning that we wanted to feed homeless pets the best food possible. And now we know from our shelters that this is important to them too because it makes a difference in their health. And when pets are healthy, they're more active and are happier. It's hard for shelters to afford good food and we feel very lucky we have Halo, Purely for Pets as our kibble sponsor. With their help we can make sure that the shelters not only have food to feed their animals, but that it's great quality natural food. Now we know that until these pets find good homes, they can be healthy, happy, energetic and full of life because they are eating food literally good enough for humans.

We would have never been able to accomplish this if it hadn't been for our "Freekibble Community." All the people that play the trivia each day make it possible for us to reach so many animals in need and to have this big of an impact. Without their loyalty and enthusiasm to support us every step of the way, there would still be tens of thousands of homeless dogs and cats that would not have had a decent dinner.

I am so excited to get to 5 million meals but even more excited for what the future holds. Through this on-going experience, I have learned that anything is possible if you work hard and make it happen. Join our "Freekibble Community" today and let's keep on helping shelters all across the country and the animals that deserve nothing less than a decent dinner. Here's to 5 million more!
