I am a huge fan of period dramas and whenever a new miniseries or movie comes out I am sure to be one of the first people to watch it. If you are a Netflix subscriber and a period drama lover then you are in luck (if not you better sign up!). I have put together 5 of my favorite period dramas that are available to stream on Netflix right now. Here are my top five picks;

  1. Velvet- This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE show on Netflix. This romantic period drama set in the 1950's hails from Spain and stars Miguel Angel Silvestre (Sense 8) and Paula Echevarría. It tells the story of Alberto, the owner of the Velvet department store and Ana, a seamstress who works there. Ana and Alberto's love story will keep you coming back for more season after season. The show is in Spanish but no worries as english subtitles are provided.
  2. Grand Hotel-The creators behind Velvet also created Grand Hotel, another show that hails from Spain. This show is set in a hotel during the turn of the century and follows the family who owns the hotel and the servants that work there. Mystery, romance and more will keep you on the edge of your seat.
  3. Death Comes to Pemberley-This show is based on the best selling novel by P.D. James. Now happily married, Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Darcy have to confront a murder mystery on their estate of Pemberley. This was an enjoyable show that kept me on the edge of my seat.
  4. Peaky Blinders-My husband absolutely loved this show and got me addicted to it! Without giving too much away, this show follows Romani gangsters in England in the 1900's, after the First World War.
  5. When Calls the Heart-Set in the late 1800s and early 1900s in the Canadian West this series is based on the novel by Janette Oke. It is a story of love, strength and family roots. I will be honest, it's a bit cheesy but it is a fun, feel good show.
