Ahhh.....cuffing season! Indeed, the most wonderful time of the year - where former flames who somehow were “too busy” throughout the spring and summer seasons have now found the time to contact you. This usually comes in the form of a text message with a simple “Hey” or “Hey Stranger” - actually, any type of hello variation with a hint of - we have history - so, hopefully you respond.

According to the Urban Dictionary, Cuffing Season is described as the following: “During the Fall and Winter months, people who would normally rather be single or promiscuous find themselves along with the rest of the world desiring to be "cuffed" or tied down by a serious relationship. The cold weather and prolonged indoor activity causes singles to become lonely and desperate to be cuffed.”

5 Reasons You Know Cuffing Is Here

1. The Holidays Are Approaching

Have you walked into your local grocery lately? Every year they have somehow managed to start decorating the store - months before the actual holiday. Advertisers will not let you forget that the holidays are coming: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day. You can’t miss these holidays with the vivid displays and musical attachments. This may prompt even the most primed bachelor to wonder if they should have someone during the holidays.

2. The Best Shows Return To Television

Summer is known for great weather and getting active outside. As fall approaches, networks know it’s the best season for TV and their highest ratings. Who doesn’t want a cuddle buddy as The Walking Dead premiers next month?

3. Friends Cancel Plans

“I’m sorry. I won’t be able to make it out tonight.” Okay, we all know a friend who always finds a reason to cancel. But when you start getting cancellations from people who usually show up to events and functions - Cuffing Is Here! All your friends are attached and you’re trying to find someone to go out with - it’s becoming more of a hassle than it’s worth.

4. Daylight Saving Time

Why is it dark as midnight at 5PM? I’m confused. Oh right, we just lost an hour and I’m wondering when I will ever see the sun again. Cuddle season is at all time record high as the colder and darker months approach.

5. Exes Are Everywhere

It is true that people will start new relationships in the cuffing season; however, exes will always find a way to contact you. It’s so much easier and requires a lot less effort to cuff an ex because of the prior history. You guys already know what show to watch, what snacks to have in the house, and which side of the bed to sleep on - all the hard work is done.

Cuffing Season usually prompts temporary relationships just to get by the holidays and colder seasons. They abruptly end either before or after Valentine’s Day of the following year. There is hope that relationships can sustain and live beyond this typical expiration date. Either way - I think it’s important to have realistic expectations as to why that woman who kept blowing you off all summer is now responding to your texts or that guy who never wanted to commit wants to discuss New Year’s Eve plans. They may have realized you’re truly the one or it could be cuffing season.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
