5Pointz 'Graffiti Mecca' Is Threatened By Redesign Plans (PHOTOS)

The 5Pointz graffiti collective could become a victim of gentrification.

The iconic warehouse which is home to thousands of pieces by some of the most famous graffiti artists from around the world has been targeted for redesign by the building's owner.

The building's owner, developer Jerry Wolkoff, said he met recently with city planning officials to discuss replacing it with two high-rise residential towers and up to 1,300 rental units.

Wolkoff wants to dramatically remake the entire block along Jackson Ave. that surrounds 5Pointz, where the No. 7 train rumbles past.

5Pointz founder, Jonathan Cohen, said he fears having the building redesigned would mean an end to one of New York's great artistic treasures.

"If it were to happen, it would be no different than tearing down the MOMA or the Guggenheim," Cohen said.

According to the collective's website, 5Pointz has united "legendary writers from Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil, and all over the United States ... "
