Don't you love it when data proves we're procrastinators? (Though we prefer "spontaneous.") Expedia just released a Labor Day travel trends report -- turns out 80 percent of us wait until August to book that weekend getaway. Thankfully, there are a dozen North American cities with cheaper-than-normal airfare right now (and if you're thinking about heading to Europe, Barcelona's average daily hotel rates are down 20 percent). Check out these hot spots, identified by Expedia, for last-minute travel inspiration.
1. Washington, D.C.
Average flight prices are down 9 percent.
2. Seattle
Seattle cracks Expedia's top 10 list for hot destinations over Labor Day (and as a former resident of Seattle, I have to say this time of year is the absolute best for visiting).
3. Miami
Average flight prices are down more than 10 percent. To plan the perfect weekend in Miami Beach, start by booking a stay at Ian Schrager's new Miami property, Miami Beach Edition ("a hit with our editors, models, art-world aficionados, and other cool kids") or The Setai, pictured, a reader favorite.
4. Chicago
Have you heard that it's rooftop bar season in Chicago? Don't forget to check out the reborn Chicago Athletic Association, open to the public for the first time in 125 years.
5. Orlando
Average flight prices are down 5 percent. You could always do Disney (the right way), or hide out at the Waldorf Astoria, pictured.
6. Cancun
Average flight prices are down more than 10 percent. And as CNT news editor Paul Brady reminds us, Cancun boasts "plentiful hotels, tons of activities--everything from Mayan ruin tours to scuba diving--and sun, glorious sun."
