Christmas is that time of year that can make the lonely feel lonelier and the poor feel poorer.
I know what it’s like to spend Christmas Day alone. I also know what it’s like to be short on pennies throughout the festive season.
But regardless of one’s emotional state or financial position — a magical Christmas is still possible. One just has to get creative.
Below is a list of 6 magical ways to spread Christmas cheer without a dime.
CHRISTMAS GRATITUDE LISTS
Gratitude lists can be sent via email or handwritten. A Christmas gratitude list requires you to write down reasons on why you’re grateful to have your friend or loved one in your life.
They’re a beautiful gift to receive and convey thoughtfulness, mindfulness and care to the recipient.
One can’t always afford to buy presents but a Christmas gratitude list only costs you your time.
SHOWING LOVE TO OUR AGED CITIZENS
The elderly are neglected throughout the festive season because Christmas time is commercially associated with children.
Many aged citizens don’t have any family which equates to no visitors.
Remember to check in on your elderly friends and family members, to let them know that you’re thinking of them.
It may seem like a small act of kindness. But it’s small acts of kindness that change the world.
SHOW COMPASSION TO THOSE WITHOUT LOVED ONES
When we have our own partners, families, parents and children. It’s easy to be self-indulgent and forget that many of us don’t have that privilege.
The festive season can bring up feelings of grief, sadness and loneliness. Be compassionate.
GO AND SIT ON SANTA’S KNEE
One is never too old to pay a visit to Santa Claus!
I may be a 40-year-old adult woman but I’ve never lost my inner child or childlike demeanor. I often go and sit on Santa’s knee to tell him what I want for Christmas. And often the big red man with the beard delivers!
VISIT LOCAL CHURCHES AND CATHEDRALS
I’m not religious at all.
But I love ceremony. I love the spiritual. And I love the architecture of churches and cathedrals.
Churches and cathedrals are a great place to visit during the festive season. You could attend a service with Christmas carols. Light a candle for a loved one. Or just sit quietly with your thoughts.
CHRISTMAS WINDOW DISPLAY
There’s nothing quite as magical as going to see the Christmas window display at a department store. Many people flock to see the spectacle during the day but I think it’s much more romantic to go at night.
I believe Christmas happiness is a choice.
I choose to express love and be celebratory this festive season! I hope you do too.
Have a magical Christmas!
