Are you making the most of your incredibly important role as CEO and creative director of your life?

You have two choices in life:

Plan A: To float along at the mercy of external events, sticking to the status quo and meeting the often-burdensome expectations of others.

Plan B: To work out what you really want and then actually create the life of your dreams, and fall in love with the adventure, excitement and magic of each day.

Spoiler alert: Plan B will make your soul MUCH happier. Jump-out-of-bed-in-the-morning happy. Walking-on-sunshine happy. Spontaneous-dancing-happy.

Unfortunately, most people live life according to Plan A, which means they get to the end of their life with little to show for it except for a long list of regrets and what-ifs.

If you want to step into your power as the creator of your life and ruler of your mind, here are 6 surefire ways to take back control of your life.

1. Get rid of the word "should".

Maybe you should be thinner, right? You should be richer. You should be smarter. You should be more interesting and charismatic. You should have a dream partner by now. You should have kids. You should have a mortgage on a big beautiful home.

Beautiful soul, you are a once-in-humankind blend of energy, ideas, passions, interests, gifts and quirks. There is nothing you "should" be -- or be doing with your life -- except what feels right to you. If you want to change and expand because it's something you desire from deep within your soul, that's awesome! I support you.

Just don't make the mistake of changing, feeling inadequate or living the wrong life because you are trying to fit yourself to a mythical standard called "normal" or because you are trying to prove your worth to other people. You are already enough.

Be you. That's one of the most powerful ways to step into your power and full potential. And let me assure you, being you is enough. It's more than enough. It's brave, courageous, life-transforming and deeply satisfying. As Echart Tolle says, "You've got to fearlessly be your own unique expression of consciousness".

2. Listen to your inner voice.

You have a unique soul imprint and your "purpose" is different to everyone else on the planet. It could be a single big purpose or, more likely, you could have a magical puzzle of smaller purposes which create the beautiful picture of your life.

If you want to find out what your purpose is and what you truly desire, you need to learn to consult with your own mind and soul for directions and advice.

Start creating a stronger connection with your inner spirit through meditation, soul writing, reading, dancing, spending time in nature, and getting lost in the flow of the things you love.

3. Map out what you desire.

If you don't know where you are going, you may end up where you are heading -- i.e. not anywhere you wish to be.

Map out your dreams, goals, values and how you want to feel in your life in all key life areas -- from love, friendships, livelihood and finances, to health, spirituality, fun and leisure.

Not only will this give you a target to aim for, but the Universe will start to bring you people, gifts and circumstances that match up with what you've specified.

4. Start living your dreams today.

Instead of waiting for a day in the distant future when you're magically transported into the life of your dreams, brainstorm ways you can start living your dreams today.

If you want to feel creative, go and buy a cheap canvas and paint set, and set aside Saturday afternoon to paint.

If you want to feel healthy and vibrant, reach out to a friend and organize a long weekend walk, enrol in a yoga class or bookmark healthy recipes online.

If you want to feel loved and beautiful, take yourself on a solo date, wear matching underwear, get a massage or write a list of everything you love about yourself.

5. Be more present.

Most of us only experience about 10 per cent of our lives. The other 90 per cent of the time we are lost in our minds, preoccupied with memories of the past, circling thoughts and worries about the future, or judgments and reactions to the things we see. Or we are lost in our smartphones and television sets.

We are not really connected with the vibrancy, beauty and magic of the world around us, nor are we centered in our own body and being. We're missing out on our own lives, which makes us feel shallow, empty and unsettled.

Try being present more often throughout the day. Every hour if you can. Notice the feeling of the clothing on your skin, the breeze in the air, the sounds around you, the taste and smell of your meal, the sunshine or the rain, the beauty of a flower, the touch of a loved one, the feeling of your body as you walk or cook or dance.

When you are present, you are in control -- you are in your full power and glory. Not only do you get to experience the richness of life, but you also get to choose how you respond to things, instead of reacting on auto-pilot. You learn to become the Queen or King of your mind, instead of being ruled by your thoughts and emotions.

6. Set intentions for your day.

When you arise in the morning consciously set an intention for your day -- a primary purpose, energy or goal. By doing so, you're claiming your power as the creator of your day, rather than being at the mercy of life.

For example, your intention could be:
  • To laugh more and embrace a light-hearted energy.
  • To feel wealthy and abundant by noticing all the gifts and simply joys around you.
  • To feel more courageous by doing things outside your comfort zone.
  • To do what you can to make other people feel valued and loved.
  • To focus on an important project without distraction or procrastination.

Intentions are powerful. They program your mind with something positive and helpful to focus on, and shift the energy around you.
