Allergy season is upon us. For those of you who suffer from winter, summer or seasonally ranging allergies, there are some natural fixes that Mother Nature has to offer that can enable you to defeat allergies. We'll give you a head start with our top seven picks for all-natural, affordable products.
Drink Green Tea
Green tea is loaded with a ton of good-for-you antioxidants that can help prevent allergies. But namely, one sticks out here: an antioxidant phytonutrient called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). It helps to block the body's release of histamine and immunoglobulin E (IgE); both key culprits in allergic reactions. They key is in finding truly organic green tea like that which is offered by American Tea Room. Experts say that a few cups of this per day helps keep the allergies at bay.
Quercetin to Quell Allergies
Quercetin is another powerful antioxidant that helps to prevent inflammation. It is a potent anti-histamine and phytonutrient that also helps accomplish a similar goal like green tea does. You can also find it naturally occurring in onions as well as in apples. Vitacost offers bottles of this on the cheap, made in GMP certified labs. It's a simple way to naturally help reduce allergic symptoms and reactions without using traditional meds.
Pineapple Enzyme To Reduce Symptoms
Some people use pineapple enzyme to combat seasonal allergies. Pineapples contain the enzyme bromelain, which has been shown to help prevent allergic reactions and reduce swelling of the lungs. This enzyme is fairly inexpensive. Places like Wal-Mart offer it online for about $15 plus shipping and tax.
A lot of people have allergies to dust mites and to other airborne allergies. The problem is that these allergies often can become easily trapped and embedded in our bedding. But certain types of bedding are inhospitable to these allergens. A company called SmartSilk makes a pillow that is spun from natural silk, and that prevents dust mites and allergens from settling in. Starting with where you sleep is a great first step in preventing future allergies. These pillows may cost a bit more than other fixes listed here (around $140 each). But bear in mind you do spend one-third of your life in bed; so it's always good to have a bedtime fix as well.
Homeopathic Allium Cepa
For indoor allergies, Allium Cepa is a great all-natural fix. It helps prevent all forms of indoor allergies and is commonly prescribed by homeopathic doctors. It's an extract from the red onion. The permeating scent of the pellets (which slowly dissolve in your mouth) are enough to unclog your sinuses and provide fast relief. Places like Pure Formula have pellets available online for about $5.50.
Use A Neti Pot For Relief
A classic fix for stuffy noses and irritated sinuses is a neti pot. You can easily find these at your local health food store or at places online like DrugStore.com for under $20. You basically follow the instructions for filling the neti pot, and then wash out your nasal passages. After a few tries, you will be a pro at opening your sinuses and flusing out the allergens that are so bothersome.
I'll be back soon with even more low-cost, all-natural fixes for those of you who do battle with allergies and sinus infections, myself included.
