"This book made me want to be a writer." Every writer has that one book, or maybe a bunch of books, that got him or her started on a life of story-telling. And then there are the books that help along the way, the ones that handle the fundamentals perfectly: character, theme, dialogue, plot, structure, voice. Over the years I've found the following books tremendously instructive, in all the ways that matter.
