7 Health Tips For College Students

As a college student, it is important that you take all of the necessary steps to take care of your health. It doesn’t take much to get your system run down, and then you get sick, and learning does not come as easily as it should. There are many things you can do to ensure good health when you are away at college. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

1. Eat Healthy Foods

You are going to be tempted to eat a lot of junk food, especially during exams when you don’t have a lot of time to prepare healthy meals. Take time to learn about healthy eating. Don’t skip breakfast, and don’t eat large meals in the middle of the night. Eat a piece of fruit between classes, and make sure that your healthy diet includes plenty of protein and fiber. Avoid processed foods, sweets, chips, candies, etc.

2. Watch for Signs of Depression

Depression is a common problem among college students, but it doesn’t have to be. You need to be watchful for the signs of depression, so you know what to look for and can tell if you are slipping into a depressive state. Avoid using drugs and alcohol, and make sure that you have a good support system that includes friends, family members, and school resources.

3. Visit a Doctor

If you are noticing symptoms that aren’t clearing up in a matter of days, it is time to see your doctor, or visit the campus clinic. Something that starts out as a simple illness can grow into something much more serious if you don’t get it checked out as soon as possible. It is a good idea to get into the habit of getting regular checkups as well, to make sure that you don’t have any health issues, and to treat issues you may have.

4. Visit a Dentist

“Your dental health is also important, so make sure that you are visiting a dentist at least once a year, preferably every six months,” says Dr. Navid Rahmani from NYC Dental Implants Center. If you have any missing teeth, it is time to consider having them replaced with dental implants. Missing teeth can lead to more missing teeth, as well as gum disease.

5. Get Plenty of Exercise

We all need to have at least a half an hour of exercise each day in order to be healthy. Even if you have a busy class schedule, it is still important that you take the time to exercise. Try doing a few exercises between classes, and walk rather than drive when running errands, attending classes, going out with friends, etc. Join a team, or get involved in activities at the college recreational center.

6. Get Lots of Sleep

It is not uncommon for college students to not get enough sleep. After all, you have a lot to do, and only so many hours in the day to do everything. But, you need your sleep, or you are not going to be able to function properly, which is going to affect your studies. Make sure that you have a regular bedtime every night, and that you don’t consume any stimulants, such as coffee, for the last four to six hours before going to bed.

7. Don’t Spread Germs

If you are sick, don’t spread it around. Make sure that you wash your hands frequently to avoid spreading germs by touching things like doorknobs, computers, etc. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and take an over-the-counter preparation such as Cold-EEZE as soon as you notice cough and cold symptoms. Never share eating utensils, glasses, drink bottles, etc.
