7 Ways to Engage an Audience
or: Thoughts on audience engagement and story-telling after watching the first episode of Lost.
I recently watched the first episode of the first season of Lost for the first time. That’s a lot of firsts! I am well aware that this show was a much-loved phenomenon, and I’m also aware that it makes me look really out-of-touch to admit that I hadn’t seen it before. Think of me what you will! But I finally watched it. And, full-disclosure: I binged on four episodes in a row within one weekend night.
I am actually kind of happy that I got to watch this after knowing what a success it went on to be, because it was through that lens - of how to create success and engage an audience, with something new, from the start - that I was able to derive some pretty cool (albeit high-level) insights to share with you.
7 Ways to Engage an Audience:
1 - Create suspense
2 - Give them something to care about
3 - Be relatable
4 - Have a sense of humor
5 - Ask for help
6 - Make them wonder
7 - Leave them wanting more
Now, don’t expect (m)any more posts on the show in the future. After just four episodes, I realized that I wouldn’t have time to get through six . My solution: grill my husband on all the who’s and why’s. Annnnd, move on to the next thing in life.
