750 Roosters Confiscated From Chicago-Area Cockfighting Training Center

Two suburban Chicago men were arrested Tuesday after police discovered a cockfighting training center that involved about 750 roosters.

Geraldo Ortiz, 32, of the 500 block of Chase Avenue in Joliet, and Ramiro Marin, 50, of the 200 block of Anderson Avenue in Joliet, have been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and owning an animal for sport fighting, TribLocal reports.

The men gave up custody of the chickens found at the Homer Glen, Ill., facility to Animal Care and Control, which is planning to euthanize them, according to TribLocal.

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer told Fox Chicago that they were alerted to the facility after receiving a tip. While authorities found no evidence of cockfighting on the site, "they found roosters were being groomed and trained for cockfighting on the property."

Cockfighting is illegal in every state excluding Louisiana.
