Selfless 8-Year-Old Cleans Up City Parks With Her Make-A-Wish

One girl who has cancer used a wish she was given to help her city instead of herself.

Amelia Meyer, an 8-year-old who has brain cancer, decided to clean up the parks of Kansas City this past Saturday, as her wish from Make-a-Wish Missouri. Her decision is proof of the 8-year-old's giving spirit.

"She could've wished to go to Disney, she could've wished to go on a cruise or go to Europe, and her wish was to take care of the world for the day," Wish manager Megan Haw told KSHB. "I just can't tell you how much I wish other children would be this much of an inspiration."

The 8-year-old visited four different parks with the help of the hundreds of volunteers who showed up to help the girl fulfill her wish. During the day, people followed Amelia on her compassionate journey via social media with the hashtag #AmeliasWish. Mayor Sly James even got involved, and even named Feb. 27, “Amelia Meyer’s Take Care of the World Day,” in honor of the girl's incredibly thoughtful mission, according to WDAF.

According to Make-a-Wish Missouri, the 8-year-old's idea was inspired by walks she took with her grandmother after treatment. They'd regularly pick up the trash that they'd see. So when it came time for Amelia to make her wish, the idea wasn't shocking to her family.

“It doesn’t look nice and another reason is because it can stay dirty and it can get animals sick,” Amelia said, according to WDAF, about the trash in the parks.

While Amelia just wanted to pick up trash and make the world a little prettier, her mother said they were shocked to see so many people come support the 8-year-old in her mission. The love Amelia's received has been comforting to the family during this difficult time.

"It's a very, very hard time for us but to see this that this came out of that. My level of gratitude is unbelievable," Jill Meyer, Amelia's mom, said according to KSHB. "My kid is so happy today and that's what it's about and that just thrills me beyond words."
