How To Wear Dark Lipstick Without Going Full Goth

We get that some women are apprehensive about red lipstick, so we can only imagine the fear brought about by darker shades. But the deep and moody lip colors from the '90s can be pulled off without going full goth.

In the video above, PopSugar Beauty reporter Kirbie Johnson explains the rules to wearing '90s dark lipstick. The most important rule? Don't overdo it with the rest of your makeup. Fresh, dewy skin, simple eyeliner and a few coats of mascara is all you'll need with vampy lips.

If you're unsure which color works best for your skin tone, look to stars like Rihanna, Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lawrence for inspiration. Tip: Berry shades are the most universally flattering.

Here are three things you need to keep in mind when applying dark lipstick:

  • Always start by outlining your lips with a nude lip pencil to prevent bleeding or feathering.

  • A dark gloss or lip stain offers a less severe finish than lipsticks applied with a brush or lip pencils.
  • To set your makeup, blot with a paper towel and not a tissue so you don't end up with white residue all over your lips.
  • These stars do dark lips best and so can you:
