Ten years after the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the National September 11 Memorial at Ground Zero will open.

On Sept. 11, Fodors reports, the memorial will only be open to victims' families. The general public will be allowed to visit beginning Sept. 12.

Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker's design for the memorial, "Reflecting Absence" was chosen from a global competition with more than 5,200 entries from around the world.

A press release announcing the winner of the competition proclaimed:

In its powerful, yet simple articulation of the footprints of the Twin Towers, “Reflecting Absence” has made the gaping voids left by the Towers’ destruction the primary symbol of loss. While these voids still remain empty and inconsolable, the surrounding plaza’s design has evolved to include teeming groves of trees, traditional affirmations of life and rebirth.

The memorial features twin reflecting pools with the largest manmade waterfalls in North America.
