The yoga sequences of present time, which we follow in the confines of our home or in different Yoga studios, is not quite the same as the ancient, archetypal, established yoga practices of the past. There is a distinction between yoga as it was, and as we know it today. This leads to a flurry of questions for many of us.

What is the origin of yoga? How can we differentiate modern yoga from its original form ? How did Yoga develop its essence as seen today?

It has previously been well established, through the Vedas and Upanishads, one of the oldest known writings in the world, that the true development of yoga began during the Vedic period, in 2000 BCE. Later, traces of yoga were noticed amongst the archaeological findings of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa, wherein some of the numerous seals found, show a man seated in a meditative pose. This implies that some form of Yogic teachings and practices were prevalent even at that time, around 1500 BCE.

Meandering down the ages, Yoga has come a long way, assimilating new learnings from great masters who pioneered new styles to fit everyone’s capabilities and requirements. Today, yoga is a spiritual discipline, but one that depends on subtle scientific facts. Yoga today, focuses on strengthening as well as bringing a balance between mind and body.

The postures of yoga were each created for a specific health purpose like detoxifying, realigning musculature, strengthening the muscles, and enhancing the flexibility of the body. When performed precisely, , in conjunction with related breathing techniques, Yoga helps vitalize -- the flow of blood in the body the functions of the digestive process, and the nervous and endocrine systems.
