We're still cleaning up after last night's big bash thrown by the Huffington Post and Yahoo! in honor of Gawker Media's Defamer.
We couldn't have asked for a better night. If you are going to celebrate the blogosphere, what better day to celebrate than a day when the news cycle delivers the Bob Woodward story, and bloggers everywhere do such an incredible job covering it, developing it, and making sure it doesn't go away.
As one partygoer put it: "Woodward's gone from Deep Throat to Deep Shit."
The Yahoo! team was out in full force, including Lloyd Braun, the former TV exec who is spearheading Yahoo's efforts to blend the showmanship of Hollywood with the interactivity of the Internet -- something he hopes will one day make people forget that his good friend Larry David borrowed Lloyd's name and gave it to a lunatic friend of Jerry and George's on Seinfeld.
When it came time for the toasts, Yahoo! was repped by Scott Moore, who is in charge of Yahoo! News. Scott read from a Washington Post article on the new Yahoo!/Gawker deal that quoted Nick Denton saying: "Yahoo has developed a certain weird geek chic. Their philosophy is just edgy enough." Scott's response: "Gee, thanks…"
When it was his turn to speak, Denton responded by citing Wednesday's two-point uptick in Yahoo's share price -- an uptick worth $3 billion -- which CNN Money linked to the announcement of the Gawker Media/Yahoo deal (under which Yahoo, which already carries HuffPost content everyday, will begin carrying content from 5 of Gawker Media's blogs). "We look forward to getting our cut," said Denton.
I then raised a glass to the guest of honor: "What can I say about Mark Lisanti and Defamer -- other than that I have it bookmarked? It is the capital of Celebrity Snark. The illegitimate offspring of Hollywood Confidential, Page Six, and Hush-Hush. If Walter Winchell, Hedda Hopper, Louella Parsons, George Wayne, Richard Johnson, and Holden Caulfield had an orgy and one of them got knocked up -- Defamer would be their love child."
