Internship programs are much like maps -- difficult to comprehend at first. But once you have the right knowledge, learning how to direct your internship program can turn into the ultimate road trip.

The actual problem lies in understanding your audience. What are interns looking for? What do they want to get out of their internships? How should you compensate them, and what perks are they dying to have? For example, 30.2 percent of interns want opportunities to do real work, and 47.3 percent are interested in access to executives and mentorship. How does your program stack up?

The following infographic, compiled by InternMatch, an online platform connecting the best intern candidates and employers, showcases this data and more in "The Map to Better Internships." Here are some key points to note:

  • 43.6% of interns are interested in flexible hours
  • 46% of students with family income below $80,000 participate in unpaid internships
  • 82% of interns have a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles are the top cities for internship opportunities
