I can probably type between 85 and 100 words per minute, maybe more depending on the combination of words you throw at me. I guess that’s about average speed but average or not, that’s the speed that gets the job done, but trust me when I tell you it wasn’t always that easy. I remember enrolling in a typing class during my sophomore year of high school. It was so awkward trying to find the correct placements for this finger and that finger but over the course of time we got the hang of it. By year’s end my skills could be labeled as decent… just above hunt and peck status.

I’ve gotten better over time but you know in all my years of typing there is still one area that gives me trouble. Always and without fail, day in and day out I find myself having trouble distinguishing between the period key and the comma key. I’ll be typing along, hitting this key and that one then out of nowhere it’ll happen; I’ll hit the period key and instead hit the comma key and vice versa. No worries though as I simply backspace and correct the mistake. I am happy to report that after all these years I am getting better but it still stands as one of my greatest typing challenges.

A period and a comma are two little punctuation marks. There isn’t a whole lot of difference in how they look but there is a world of difference in what they mean. A comma means to pause while a period… a period means it’s over. A comma is used to give space while a period… a period says there is no more space to give because the end has come. A comma says there’s more to come while a period… a period says there is nothing left... And while there are only subtle differences in the way they look, where they are placed can change everything.

A period and a comma are two little punctuation marks. Not a whole lot of difference in the way they look but as I said before, there is a world of difference in what they mean. What I have learned is that periods and commas have a place in reading and writing but they also have a place in life. How many times in life have you used a period when God was trying to use a comma?

You were denied a promotion on the job and instead of continuing to bring your best day in and day out, you used a period and started being average… when God intended to use a comma because there was so much more job to come. You use a period in a relationship after a heated conversation… when God knew that he or she was the one… and He intended to place a comma there just so the two of you could… pause. You use a period on a child because you feel like you have nothing left when God intended for you to use a comma because He sees so much more…

Friend, be careful of how you choose to punctuate your life. Get to know when life is calling for you to use a period and when it is telling you to use a comma.

Because while there are only subtle differences in the way they look, where they are placed in your life…

Can change everything….
