Video killed the radio star, but it certainly didn't kill Kevin Bacon's 1990 cult classic Tremors. The "horror-emdy" about huge carnivorous worms living underground in a desert may have failed to resonate in the theaters when it was released (it was met with about as much fanfare as Tyne Daly belly flopping in the ocean - whatever that means) - but it got a new lease on life via video cassette, spawning straight-to-video sequels and a legion of new fans.
Some 25 years after its release, Bacon took part in a Q&A following a screening of the film in its original 35mm format Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, NY on Sept. 10, and weighed in on how much he still enjoys seeing the film. As a matter of fact, he said he rarely watches his own films but has gone back to Tremors, and is amazed at how well it holds up. Anyway, as audiences laughed their tails off and took in the pre-CGI "graboids" in all their glory, Bacon sat down for an exclusive A-Sides chat in an adjacent theater, and discussed the film's legs, co-star Michael Gross and his lack of a Family Ties beard, his own career, and embracing his sizzling last name. And while Tremors was a one-shot screening, you can see Bacon on screen currently in the acclaimed Cop Car and this week's much-buzzed-about Black Mass.
