This Accused Drunk Driver's BAC Was Allegedly High Enough To Kill Some People

The suspect's two kids were also in the car.

A Florida man facing charges of drunk driving and child neglect is just lucky to be alive.

That's because police measured the suspect's blood alcohol level at a whopping .604 -- more than seven times the legal limit.

Deputies in Lee County arrested Stephen Allbritton on Friday morning after the 46-year-old was found passed out in a black Ford Expedition.

The SUV was parked in the middle of the road with the hazard lights on. Allbritton's two teenage children were in the car, according to WinkNews.

The responding officers said Allbritton was unresponsive and unable to get out of the car on his own.

He was taken to an area hospital where his BAC initially registered at .604, according to The Smoking Gun.

The kids were put in the custody of their mother.

Albritton's BAC is pretty startling. Not only is it way above the legal limit of .08, but it's much higher than the .450 level considered life-threatening by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Albritton's BAC was considered too high to take to jail, so deputies waited seven hours until his level went down to 0.4. At that point, he was arrested for DUI and child neglect, according to WBBH TV.

Police said when they questioned Albritton he denied consuming any alcohol. He stopped speaking after officers showed him the hospital-recorded blood alcohol levels, News-Press.com reports.

Dr. Timothy Dougherty, a medical toxicologist and medical director of Cape Coral Hospital Emergency Department, told the paper that he has seen people with levels at 0.600.

Surviving levels that high usually means a built up tolerance to alcohol, he said.

"Just because you are tolerant at a level of 0.400 by no means should they be behind the wheel or doing anything that could harm others."

Albritton was booked into the Lee County Jail on one felony charge of child neglect, one misdemeanor count of refusing a DUI test and one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence.

He has since been released after posting $10,000 bond and is due in court May 31.
