Adam Platt, Restaurant Critic, Gets Kicked Out Of ZZ's Clam Bar

All over a bad review.

Nearly six months after New York magazine restaurant critic Adam Platt gave Manhattan eatery Carbone a one-star rating, the scribe found himself at the receiving end of the owners' wrath -- by getting the boot from sister restaurant ZZ's Clam Bar.

Platt tweeted about the incident last night and seems remarkably nonplussed by the whole thing:

— Adam Platt (@plattypants)

It's unclear what exactly went down, but Platt told NYMag that he and his companion were on their "best behavior" during their two hour visit when a stern-looking bouncer sauntered over.

"I'm sorry, but you guys are done," the bouncer said. Although Platt can't confirm it, he's fairly certain that his Carbone review was to blame for the expulsion. ZZ's Clam Bar owners Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick, who also own the Italian eateries Torrisi, Carbone and sandwich shop Parm, did not respond to NYMag's request for comment.

For all the theatrics of his exit, Platt was still complimentary of the fare he sampled -- though he noted it was all wildly expensive. Given his treatment, he doubts he'll return.

Incidents like these are fairly uncommon in the U.S., but NYMag notes that it's happened in the U.K. before, and First We Feast has a brief history of such dismissals.

Other food writers have since chimed in about Platt's experience. Here are a few reactions:

.@snezan @plattypants @qualityrye Can't tell critics what to review but can refuse to serve us. "Management reserves the right" etc.

Ugh. Critics getting bounced (even though Dolinsky isn't a critic) isn't good, if they are behaving. Chef Overreach. http://t.co/EuIABoBglQ

@snezan @pete_wells @plattypants it's always embarrassing when a restaurant owner tries to remove my Queen of England disguise.

How professional. RT @Eater: Critic Adam Platt was booted mid-meal from ZZ's Clam Bar in NYC http://t.co/pWz7NERVUf

At least Platt got a free meal out the whole debacle. And ZZ's Clam Bar got a bit of press.
