Adam Stansfield Dead: Cancer Takes Soccer Forward's Life At 31

British Soccer Forward Dead At 31

After a four-month battle with cancer, BBC reports that Exeter City forward Adam Stansfield died yesterday. He was 31.

"It is with great sadness that Exeter City Football Club have to confirm the news that Adam Stansfield passed away this evening," Exeter City said in its official statement released last night.

After complaining about abdominal pain in April, doctors diagnosed Stansfield with bowel cancer, according to Goal.com.

The news had a profound effect on his most recent team, according to Exeter City director Steve Perryman.

"I saw the faces of the players after [they were told]," Perryman said, according to BBC, "And they were absolutely devastated, this is a true team player, a great friend, and they've lost a wonderful person."

Stansfield played professionally since 2001 for three different clubs: Yeovil Town (2001-2004), Hereford United (2004-2006), and Exeter City (2006-2010). His career season was the 2004-2005 season for Hereford United, during which he scored 22 goals in 53 appearances.

In the 2009-2010 season, Stansfield played in 27 games for Exeter City, his last being March 20.
