Project Prevention Offers Drug Addicts Cash Incentives To Get Sterilized Or Use Birth Control (VIDEO)

Program Pays Drug Addicts To Get Sterilized

Should there by financial incentives for drug addicts to get vasectomies or tubal ligation? Or to use birth control until they're in a better condition to raise children?

It sounds like a dehumanizing approach to a serious problem, but a nonprofit is doing just that, paying thousands of dollars to addicts to not have kids.

Barbara Harris, the founder of the North Carolina-based Project Prevention, recently joined HuffPost Live to explain her organization's goals. To date, she said Project Prevention has facilitated 84 vasectomies and 1,525 tubal ligations. The rest of the individuals are either using IUDs or birth control implants. Harris said she started the organization after she and her husband adopted four children from a woman who was battling drug addiction.
