With days to go before Afghans choose a successor for President Karzai, preparations are in full swing in many parts of the violence-ridden country.
Threats of violence and a new wave of militant attacks have not deterred millions to registere to vote on April 5. Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission said some 3.8 million new voters -- over one-third of them women -- had signed up to take part in the election by the April 1 deadline, Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty reported. Thousands of election monitors were preparing to oversee more than 6,000 polling centers around the country, The Guardian said. And while a recent Gallup poll revealed that most Afghans expect electoral fraud to be rampant, excitement in the country is palpable.
