After Matisse's Portrait of Yvonne Landsberg

She sat as if perched upon a high throne/ Silently regal yet not quite at home. Lazy moonlight through windows darkly shone/ On a woman content to be alone.

She sat as if perched upon a high throne

Silently regal yet not quite at home.

Lazy moonlight through windows darkly shone

On a woman content to be alone.

Shadows cast on shadows fallen on walls.

Grays waltz with smoke on an indigo floor.

Her pouting face looks like a porcelain doll,

Unable to answer your despairing call.

If you let yourself watch with dreamer's eyes,

You will see through the façade and disguise,

As she reveals her heavenly surprise --

Her goddess nature beautiful and wise.

She radiates heart shaped wings and halos,

Forever touching the depths of your soul.
