Measles Scare: Travelers And Workers At Four Major U.S. airports May Have Been Exposed

WATCH: Traveler With Measles Sparks Scare At Four U.S. Airports

A traveler with measles has caused concern that workers and thousands of travelers passing through four major U.S. Airports could have been exposed to the highly infectious viral illness.

The traveler, a 27-year-old woman from Santa Fe, New Mexico, is reported to have 'traveled from London to Washington, D.C. last week, then two days later flew from Baltimore to Denver before taking another flight to Albuquerque."

William Schaffner, chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt Medical School told ABC News, "Public health authorities considers this a medical urgency, if not an emergency. They will do everything they can to track down everyone to see if they are indeed protected."

According to Medicalnewstoday.com, "Colorado health officials informed their staff that she had been at Denver International Airport 'for several hours' last Tuesday."

Authorities say "people who were at the airports at the same time as the infected traveler and develop a fever or other symptoms should contact their doctors."

The CDC website states that measles spreads through the air by breathing, coughing or sneezing. It is so contagious that any child who is exposed to it and is not immune will probably get the disease. For more information about measles, visit the CDC measles information page.
