Al Jazeera Launches Worldwide Day Of Action For Detained Journalists

GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION

Al Jazeera will launch a number of events in more than 30 countries on Thursday in support of the detained journalists in Egypt.

The "Global Day of Action," which will include vigils and "stands of solidarity," is the latest movement from the #FreeAJStaff campaign that hopes to pressure Egyptian authorities to release four Al Jazeera journalists. Events will take off in places like Manila, London, Rio, Sydney and San Francisco, and the campaign will also use social media to allow supporters to send messages collectively across nearly every continent, the organization said Wednesday.

Al Jazeera's Peter Greste, Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy have been detained in Egypt since December, and Abdullah Elshamy has been held since August. Despite several journalist protests, the worldwide trending #FreeAJStaff hashtag and calls for action by both the UN and more than 50 news organizations, 20 journalists are still awaiting a verdict on terrorist-related charges in Egypt. Al Jazeera said that they hope the Day of Action will send the message to Egypt that "journalism is not a crime.”
