Gaming Parlor, Anyone? Alamo Square Mega-Mansion Hits The Market

In San Francisco design, we hail the modern, the sustainable, the clean and the efficient. When in doubt, we consult the bible — and Dwell has never steered us astray.

But before clean, there was ornate. Before modern, there was Victorian. And before minimalist, there was avant-garde. Celebrating all of the above: The Alamo Square Mansion.

Presented by Anne Herrera and Sotheby's International Realty, this Queen Anne Victorian mansion is built with some serious stone, glass and rare woods. The two-lot home houses 16 rooms, including seven bedrooms, five-and-a-half baths, parking for eight and a detached one-bedroom guesthouse. The house is not without its comforts: a warm library, inviting gaming parlor and bathroom with a dry sauna make the place surprisingly cozy. And the ballroom, formal dining room and commercial grade kitchen beg for a party of Gatsby proportions.

To top it all off, the house is in Alamo Square, meaning it's steps from Alamo Square Park, the Independent, Bar Jules, NOPA and La Boulange (plus a million other bars and restaurants) and every bus line in the city. You know, in case the Rolls is in the shop.

While we are aware the design is more than a little dated (see the granite surrounding the master bed), we'll be the first to admit that we wouldn't turn down a dinner party invitation to this place. Ever. It's like Xanadu in Hayes Valley.

And best off all, its being offered at $3,500,000. (That's $1.4 million less than the asking price just one month ago.)
