Dershowitz Blasts ‘Superficial’ Diversity On Campus

"The last thing many of these students want is real diversity, diversity of ideas."

Alan Dershowitz told Fox News on Thursday night that a "curtain of McCarthyism" is falling on American colleges because of how they're policing students' speech.

The author and professor discussed the dangers of curbing First Amendment rights on college campuses during "The Kelly File" with host Megyn Kelly.

"The last thing many of these students want is real diversity, diversity of ideas," Dershowitz said on air, arguing that the students only want "superficial" diversity of color and gender -- but that this compromises the "real" diversity of ideas.

His comments come amid protests and tension at the University of Missouri, where student activists forced administrators to resign this week over how they had handled racist incidents on campus. In the wake of the resignations, students reported several additional racist incidents to police, including being called racial slurs.

Police insisted students report any "hateful" speech on campus, which worried free speech advocates. The American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri responded with a statement urging the university not to compromise the right to free expression in an effort to fight racism.

But students, faculty members and advocates maintain that hostile discourse makes many students feel physically and psychologically unsafe on campus.

Dershowitz said Thursday during his Fox appearance that "the fog of fascism is descending quickly over many American universities."
