The only innocent man on "Alcatraz" (Mon., 9 p.m. ET on Fox) returned to the present day, but he wasn't the same Clarence Montgomery that went in. That man was convicted for a murder he didn't commit. But now he's back, and recreating that same murder scene from more than half a century ago. How could that be?
As has been hinted, Alcatraz was about more than just incarcerating and holding the most dangerous men in the world. There were strange experiments going on with their blood, but for what purpose? For that matter, for what purpose did the warden orchestrate a prison riot between the white and black inmates over Clarence being the head cook at the next meal?
All of these are questions that may never get an answer, as Fox is moving quickly through this first season, and there's no guarantee that the show will be renewed for a second season. One thing's for sure, though: the warden wanted to ensure Clarence was a killer. Maybe he knew Clarence was innocent, and their experiments would only work on guilty men. So he made Clarence into one.
After subjecting Clarence to torture by forcing him to watch images of the murder he was convicted for among other horrific sounds and images insisting on his guilt -- as well as possibly doing something to his blood -- Clarence turned and killed a man in the kitchen, as if it was an out-of-body experience.
It was this behavior he continued in the modern day when he returned, killing two young women before the team tracked him down at an old friend's house. But Clarence wasn't one of the inmates who would be brought in alive. Instead, his friend saved him from going in again by killing him.
"Alcatraz" has two more weeks in its first season, continuing next Monday at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
