Gay Voices' 30 Days Of LGBT Holiday Giving: Ali Forney Center

30 Days Of LGBT Holiday Giving: Donate To The Ali Forney Center

Note: This holiday season, in lieu of a traditional holiday gift guide, we'll be featuring a different LGBT organization each day for our "30 Days Of LGBT Giving." Check back tomorrow for a look at another incredible group that's working tirelessly on behalf of the LGBT community.

Homelessness has always and continues to afflict lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. And it's organizations like the Ali Forney Center in New York City that exist to rescue homeless LGBT youth off the streets and into safe LGBT-affirming environments.

Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Sandy, the center's main drop-in center in Chelsea was destroyed and deemed inoperable and uninhabitable. For seven years, the drop-in center provided food, showers, clothing, medical care, HIV testing and treatment, as well as other health and wellness services.

Ali Forney also operates several housing sites throughout the NYC metropolitan area, which were not affected by Sandy.

To find out more about the Ali Forney Center and how you can donate to their rebuilding efforts and make the holidays brighter for homeless LGBT youth, visit their website and read an open letter from the center's executive director, Carl Siciliano, about Hurricane Sandy's damage (and video above). The center can also be found on Twitter @AliForneyCenter and on Facebook.
