A Running List Of Shameful Islamophobic Acts Since The Paris Attacks

This is not OK.

There have been near-daily reports of violence, harassment, intimidation and bigotry against Muslims in the United States and Canada since the self-described Islamic State claimed responsibility for the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks that killed 130 people in Paris.

The Huffington Post will continue to document deplorable Islamophobic acts. Sadly, it's a list that will likely need to be updated often, so be sure to check back.

Kim Bellware, Andy Campbell and Nick Wing contributed reporting. This article has been updated multiple times throughout. If you wish to report an anti-Muslim act to The Huffington Post, please email christopher.mathias@huffingtonpost.com.

That's when Shah says he was sent menacing, Islamophobic texts. "Death to Muslims," read one text, above a picture of Shah taken from his Facebook Page. "Get out of my country bitch." Then, a man from the company told Shah over the phone that he wanted to see him dead in the street, Shah told DCist. Shah, who is not a Muslim, was born in the United States.

Reached for comment by DCist, Dickey, the owner of Paint1ng, was unrepentant, saying that what was sent to Shah "wasn't a threat" and was a "heat-of-the-moment thing." He added that "of course it was the wrong thing to say but it's just how I feel." Dickey also asked DCist not to publish anything about his texts to Shah, adding:

I don't think there's a story here unless you want to capitalize on the whole Muslim thing. I think if you do a story about this, we'll get business from the people who aren't fans of Muslims. There are a lot of people right now who don't like Muslims, and they'll probably be like, 'Hell yeah, let me give you some business.'

Washington police are investigating the incident as a potential felony threat.

"...nobody said anything. I literally couldn’t believe he said that and I asked him to repeat what he had just said. Maybe I should have let it go, maybe I set myself up for this, but I couldn’t believe what he said and I guess I hoped someone would have the humanity to acknowledge it because their silence hurt just as much as his words. But nobody cared when he repeated it and they didn’t care when he added, “And the same goes for you. What? You have a gun in there? Just go ahead and shoot me.”

Restaurant staff tried to seat the man in a "pathetic attempt to deescalate the situation," Al-Nahi wrote. "They chose to seat the racist guy who just made a girl cry right in from [sic] them, rather than us. When we spoke to management, they basically said they were sorry it happened, but they can’t do anything. They couldn’t not seat him."

Facebook

Abdennabi and Al-Nahi then confronted the man again, who doubled down on his racist remarks. The pair decided to leave. According to Al-Nahi, "As we turn to leave, Leilah, in tears, says, 'Just so everyone knows we were told very racist things and this restaurant doesn’t feel the need to address it because who cares about us?' And somebody called out, 'Nobody.' and we left. Because it was true."

Kerbey Lane Cafe later reached out to the two women and apologized. The restaurant's CEO also issued a public apology, saying the establishment "is no place for hatred and I’m so very sorry about what happened."

Who: David Wright III, who is part of an anti-Islam group called The Bureau of American-Islamic Relations, or BAIR, and who previously organized an armed protest of a local mosque
What: Wright published the names and addresses of about 60 Muslims and "Muslim sympathizers" to BAIR's Facebook page. The list specifically named Irving-area residents who earlier this year spoke out against the city council's and mayor's support for an Islamophobic bill in the state legislature.

"This is the first time I’ve been slightly alarmed," she said. "As bad as things have gotten in the past, and especially recently, this is the first time where I see people taking this public." The post has since been removed, but it's unclear if Wright did so voluntarily, or if Facebook deleted the post for violating the site's community standards. Muslim Fulbright Scholar Removed From Flight

Twitter/@_kameelahr

Where: Newark Liberty International Airport
When: Tuesday, Nov. 24
Who: Kameelah Rasheed, a Stanford University graduate, Fulbright scholar and contributing editor at The New Inquiry. She is also a Muslim woman who wears a hijab.
What: While on her way to Istanbul for a vacation, Rasheed was detained at the airport by customs agents who confiscated her passport and phone.

"Why are you flying?" the agents asked, Rasheed told Al-Jazeera. "Where are you going in Istanbul? How can you afford to go on holiday? How much was the ticket price?"

The agents also asked why she had booked a one-way ticket, even though Rasheed says she showed them her return flight details. Rasheed was eventually allowed to board her Lufthansa flight, but then was removed from the plane and interrogated by an FBI agent. She says she was the only visibly Muslim passenger, and the only one removed from the flight.

“"I don't think there is a resurgence of Islamophobia after the Paris attacks. I think it never went away. It's becoming more legitimized. Right after 9/11, you could do it [commit hate crimes towards Muslims] for a couple of years and no one would blame you… And now after Paris, it's like, 'look at what they did, I can treat them how I want.' We didn't make any progress."”

- Kameelah Rasheed, to Al Jazeera.

The humiliating ordeal lasted two-and-half hours, and Rasheed was eventually released. She announced on Twitter -- where her story had gained attention -- that she was going back home to Brooklyn. She is now calling on Lufthansa to refund the cost of her flight.

"I'm still very angry and hurt, but I have to temper that with not having expectations for being treated better," she told Al Jazeera. "I shouldn't expect any better. This is the militarised state that we have decided to live in. These are the consequences of me being Muslim and black and American -- everything at the moment is organized around me being checked. This is what it is."

This incident was at least the fourth time since the Paris attacks that people in the U.S. who appeared to be Muslim either have been removed from a flight or prevented from boarding.
